What is Influenza (Flu)?

The flu is a viral disorder that affects the respiratory system. The flu can cause symptoms that mimic the common cold. You are likely to have a cold when symptoms develop slowly. Flu symptoms come on quick and much more severe. The flu can keep you in bed for days and feeling tired for weeks. Some symptoms of the flu include fever, muscle aches, sore throat, cough, stuffy nose, fatigue, weakness, headaches, chills, and sweats. The flu is highly contagious and travels through the air. The flu is usually contracted by an infected person who sneezes or coughs. You can inhale the virus from the infected person. The flu is also contracted through objects such as phones, computers, or shaking hands. The flu can be transmitted to you through your eyes, nose, or mouth after contact with an infected object or person. Complications from the flu can be severe. Frequent hand washing and covering your mouth and nose may help to decrease the spread of the flu.
